Christmas marketing ideas for online stores
Christmas marketing ideas for an online store work best when they follow how people buy gifts: they browse early, decide late and stop ordering once delivery before the holiday is no longer certain. This guide gives a December plan, gift guides, offers that keep margin, delivery deadlines, gift cards for late buyers, an advent prize game and what to do in January.
Why December needs its own plan
The gift season is the biggest online selling period of the year. Adobe Analytics measured 257.8 billion dollars spent online in the US between November 1 and December 31, 2025, up 6.8% on 2024, and 56.4% of it was spent on phones.
Shoppers plan to spend more again: Deloitte's 2026 holiday retail survey of 4,000 US consumers expects 1,654 dollars per household, about 4% more than last year.
Black Friday and Christmas are different sales. Black Friday is about the deal; in December people are looking for the right gift and need it to arrive on time. Plan both, but do not repeat the Black Friday discount for a whole month.
A December timeline
Right after Cyber Monday (November 30, 2026): put the gift guide and gift cards live, and switch banners from "deal" to "gift".
First and second week of December: send the gift guide by email, post gift ideas on social media and start the advent game if you run one. Publish your last order date for delivery before Christmas.
The week before your delivery deadline: remind everyone of the date, then send a last call the day before it.
After the deadline: sell gift cards, click and collect or local delivery if you have them, and digital products. From December 26: the after-Christmas sale and returns. In January: New Year, and in some countries Orthodox Christmas on January 7 and Three Kings' Day on January 6.
Gift guides that sell
Most buyers in December are shopping for someone else and do not know your products. A gift guide answers their real question: what to buy for whom, at what price.
Group gifts by person (for her, for him, for kids, for colleagues) and by budget (under 20, under 50, under 100). Put the price bands in the menu, not only on one page.
Write one line per product about who it suits and why, show a photo with the product wrapped or in use, and say clearly if it can still arrive before Christmas.
Offers that keep your margin
Free gift wrapping or a handwritten card costs little and solves a real problem for the buyer.
Gift sets and bundles: combine a bestseller with a slower product at a set price. The buyer gets a finished gift, you move stock.
A gift with purchase above a minimum basket (for example a free small item on orders over 60 euros) raises the order value without cutting prices on everything.
In the EU, a price reduction has to show the lowest price of the previous 30 days as the reference price (the Omnibus rule), so plan discounts before you raise any prices in November.
Delivery deadlines and trust
Ask your carrier for their last safe dispatch date for each country you ship to, add a day of margin and show that date as your last order date: in the header, on product pages and at checkout.
Show the delivery estimate on the product page, not only at checkout. In December, "arrives before Christmas" is often the reason someone buys.
Extend your return window for gifts (for example until mid-January) and say so on the product page. Buyers order more easily when the person receiving the gift can exchange it.
Gift cards for the last-minute buyers
Once physical delivery before Christmas is no longer certain, gift cards keep you selling. They arrive by email in seconds and can be printed at home.
Offer fixed amounts, a nice design and a personal message field, and make it possible to send the card on a chosen date, such as Christmas morning.
Gift cards also bring new customers in January: the person who receives one comes to your shop for the first time, often spends more than the card and may come back.
An advent prize game
A daily game in December works like an advent calendar: visitors come back to play, and each visit is a chance to show the gift guide. A spin a day with small prizes most days and a rare bigger one keeps the cost under control.
With DealCraft you choose a wheel, scratch card or mystery box, set the win rate and a budget cap for the whole month, and limit plays per player with a cooldown, for example one play a day. The server decides each result before the animation, and every prize code is single-use with an expiry date and an optional minimum purchase.
Make the prizes match the season: free gift wrapping, free delivery, a small gift with the order, 10% off. Let codes expire before your delivery deadline for physical products, so the prizes create orders that still arrive in time.
After Christmas: returns, gift cards and January
December 26 to the end of the year is a good time for an after-Christmas sale on what is left, and for shoppers with gift cards and money they received as gifts.
Handle returns quickly and friendly. A smooth exchange in January is the first contact many gift receivers have with your shop.
Send December's first-time buyers a short welcome series in January with a next-order offer: many of them bought a gift and may now buy for themselves.
Mistakes to avoid
Running the Black Friday discount all December. It costs margin on buyers who would have paid full price for the right gift.
A hidden or missing last order date. Buyers who are not sure their gift arrives in time do not order.
Running out of bestsellers in mid-December. Check stock in November and reorder the products that sold best last year.
Stopping marketing after the delivery deadline, when gift cards and digital products can still sell for days.
Questions
- When should I start Christmas marketing?
- Have your gift guide and gift cards ready right after Cyber Monday, which is November 30 in 2026. Many buyers start then, and physical gifts keep selling until your last order date for delivery before Christmas.
- What are good Christmas promotion ideas for a small online store?
- A gift guide by person and budget, free gift wrapping, gift sets, a gift with purchase above a minimum basket, gift cards for late buyers and a daily advent game with a capped prize budget.
- Should I discount at Christmas?
- Use discounts sparingly. In December people look for the right gift more than the lowest price, so services like wrapping, fast delivery and easy exchanges often sell better than a percentage off.
- How do I sell after the Christmas delivery deadline?
- Sell gift cards that arrive by email, digital products, and click and collect or local delivery if you have them. Say clearly on the site that these still arrive on time.
- Does a prize game work at Christmas?
- Yes, as a daily advent game: visitors return each day to play. Set a budget cap for the month, one play per day, small prizes most days and codes that expire before your delivery deadline.
